Job description

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Theoretical or Computational Physics

Description

The Department of Physics at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in theoretical or computational physics to begin in August 2027. We seek candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research who can help us implement best teaching practices, thoughtfully integrate emerging technologies like AI into the physics curriculum, and contribute to the variety of our physics elective offerings. Ideal candidates will demonstrate the ability to involve undergraduates in meaningful research projects, contribute to our physics curriculum at all levels, and help students develop key academic and professional skills. No lab space is available for this position. The Physics Department consists of seven faculty members and approximately 40 majors, and more information can be found at our website: https://www.holycross.edu/academics/department/physics.

This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross, new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e., 2-2). This position offers full benefits and a starting salary of $102,500.

In alignment with the strategic plans for Holy Cross and the division of Academic Affairs, we view academic excellence and inclusive excellence as inextricably linked. Our faculty combine high-impact scholarship and outstanding teaching with a deep commitment to inclusive excellence. They generate new knowledge in their fields while utilizing evidence-based teaching strategies and course designs to create classroom environments where all students have a sense of belonging, are valued, and can flourish to reach their full potential. Academic freedom is a cornerstone of our intellectual and moral community; the College is committed to supporting faculty and students as they work to advance our educational mission and serve the common good.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate teaching as well as a commitment to inclusive pedagogies. A Ph. D. in physics or a closely related field is required by the beginning of the appointment.

Application Instructions

Please submit

  1. A cover letter addressing the position requirements listed above as well as the ways you might contribute to and further the College's mission as a Jesuit, undergraduate liberal arts college and its core commitment to creating a community where every individual feels empowered to contribute their talents and perspectives.
  2. A curriculum vitae.
  3. Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
  4. A statement of your teaching philosophy and interests, with particular emphasis on how you utilize evidence-based teaching strategies to foster inclusive, high-belonging classroom environments. Please also address your pedagogical approach to Introductory Physics, other courses you have taught or might develop for our program, and your strategies for integrating emerging technologies like AI into your teaching while guiding students in their ethical use.
  5. A research statement (up to 3 pages) describing your proposed research program at Holy Cross and how you will engage undergraduates as active participants in your research.

The College of the Holy Cross uses Interfolio to collect all faculty job applications. Please submit all materials to https://apply.interfolio.com/191148.

For full consideration, please apply by September 25th. Initial interviews via Zoom will take place in the second half of October, and campus visits for finalists will take place in mid-November. Candidates invited for Zoom interviews will be required to submit 3 confidential letters of recommendation. Questions about this search may be directed to Paul Oxley (poxley@holycross.edu).

The Provost's Office supports the Association of American Universities' principles on preventing sexual harassment in academia. Accordingly, all finalists will be asked to attest that they are not currently under investigation for sexual misconduct and that there are no substantiated findings of sexual misconduct against them in any previous position - or, if such findings exist, to provide a full explanation. The candidate selected for an offer will also be asked to provide written consent for the release of personnel information from their prior employer.

For applicants who may require visa sponsorship: The College supports new faculty in pursuing an appropriate visa or other immigration status consistent with their qualifications and the responsibilities of the position. Because several pathways may be available, the College works with candidates who are offered positions to determine the most appropriate option. Please note, however, the College does not support H1-B visa petitions that are subject to the payment of an additional $100,000 fee. The College, where appropriate, will support H-1B petitions that are not subject to the $100,000 fee.
