Job description

Requisition # 76040 Position Basics Type of Position TENURE-TRACK Advertising Ends on: Extended Until Position is Filled Advertising Started on: Tuesday, September 22nd, 2026 College: College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Department: Statistics & Actuarial Science Salary Salary: Commensurate Position Details Full/Part Time Status: Full Time Position Description: The University of Iowa seeks a visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, an established, highly regarded program entering a generational transition in a rapidly changing scientific and educational environment. With a strong foundation of alumni engagement, donor support, and institutional investment, this role offers a rare opportunity to guide faculty renewal, elevate research and teaching, and position the department for decades of impact. The position also carries the title of Robert V. Hogg Endowed Chair, honoring Robert (Bob) Hogg, the Department’s founding chair, who had a distinguished 51-year career at Iowa. The University of Iowa’s Department of Statistics is one of the oldest and most distinguished statistics departments in the United States, with a history that reflects both foundational contributions to the discipline and a sustained commitment to innovation. Established as a standalone department in the mid-20th century, it has played a pioneering role in advancing statistical theory and practice, while maintaining strong interdisciplinary ties across the university. This combination of rich history, scholarly distinction, and forward-looking vision makes it an exceptional opportunity for a new department chair to shape the next chapter of its growth and influence.

For H-1B petitions subject to the September 19, 2025 Presidential Proclamation, please note that the department will not cover the $100,000 payment associated with H-1B sponsorship, either at the time of hire or for international travel purposes. We encourage impacted individuals to explore alternative pathways for work authorization. Our Faculty & Staff Immigration Services team is available to help identify options that may be suitable for your situation.

Salary vs prevailing wage

Level III (experienced)

Statisticians · Iowa City, IA. Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).

L1L2L3L4
LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$74,027~15%
Level II$85,301~31%
Level III$96,574~46%
Level IV$107,848~61%

This job pays $100,000 a year — that's Level III (experienced). In the wage-weighted H-1B lottery a Level III registration gets 3 entries; estimated selection chance about 46% — better than average.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
