Job Description
Stetson University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Computer Science, with a focus on cybersecurity, beginning in August 2027. We seek a broadly trained computer scientist with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting who will help grow and shape our Bachelor of Science program in Cybersecurity.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Ph. D. in computer science, cybersecurity, or a closely related field is required by the appointment start date. ABD candidates will be considered if they expect to complete all degree requirements before the appointment begins. Candidates should demonstrate excellence or strong potential in undergraduate teaching, the ability to teach across the computer science curriculum, and the potential to sustain an active scholarly agenda. Particular consideration will be given to candidates whose teaching, scholarship, professional experience, or certifications demonstrate the ability to contribute to the Cybersecurity program. Experience with inclusive teaching practices and undergraduate research mentorship is also preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The annual teaching load is five courses plus one course-equivalent immersive experience offered through Hatter Ready, the University's experiential learning initiative.
The successful candidate will teach across the computer science curriculum, including the introductory sequence and upper-division courses in their area of expertise, and will contribute regularly to courses in the Cybersecurity program. Teaching assignments may also include General Education courses, such as First-Year Seminars and Junior Seminars. Additional responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarship, academic advising, mentoring senior research projects, and service to the department and University. For more information on our expectations in teaching and scholarship, our tenure policies, and our support for faculty development, please see the Academic Affairs website at http://www.stetson.edu/administration/provost/prospective-faculty/index.php.
THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (https://www.stetson.edu/other/academics/programs.php) offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, and Cybersecurity, as well as Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The computer science faculty serve approximately 150 student majors across the three programs. The Cybersecurity program features a focused eight-course curriculum. Small classes and individual mentorship on semester-long senior research projects allow faculty to develop close working relationships with students, and students and faculty regularly collaborate on research, publish papers, and present their work at conferences. The department has hosted hackathons and high school programming contests and supports an active computer science club.
THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES:
Stetson's College of Arts and Sciences (https://www.stetson.edu/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University's colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University. A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars. The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; seven graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing. Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, allowing students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship. Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility. All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community. The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.

Which visas can work for this job
Occupation: Computer Science Teachers, Postsecondary (SOC 25-1021).
- H-1B cap-exempt employer
Likely cap-exempt (university, affiliated hospital or nonprofit research body): H-1B can be filed any time of year, with no lottery. Confirm with HR.
- TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)
This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Teacher (college, university or seminary)” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.
- E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)
Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.
- O-1 (extraordinary ability)
For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.
Salary vs prevailing wage
Computer Science Teachers, Postsecondary · Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach, FL. Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).
| Level | Prevailing wage | H-1B lottery odds* |
|---|---|---|
| Level I | $50,000 | ~15% |
| Level II | $61,630 | ~31% |
| Level III | $73,260 | ~46% |
| Level IV | $84,890 | ~61% |
The listing has no salary, so we can't place it on a wage level. Ask the employer which wage level they'd file at: Level III–IV registrations get 3–4 entries in the H-1B lottery.
* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
