Job description

Job Description Stetson University seeks an outstanding musician and educator for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Music in Violin, starting in August 2027.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will bring a proven record of performance excellence and effective teaching experience to Stetson’s undergraduate-only violin studio. Broad knowledge of solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire and demonstrated potential for effective recruiting are essential. A terminal degree (DMA or PhD) in music is preferred, though candidates with a master’s degree and significant professional achievement, ABD doctoral candidates, and individuals with equivalent international credentials will be considered.

We are especially interested in applicants whose candidacy demonstrates a strong alignment with the recently reaffirmed University Values (https://www.stetson.edu/other/about/mission-and-values.php). For more information on our expectations in teaching and scholarship, our tenure policies, and our support for faculty development, please see the Academic Affairs website at https://www.stetson.edu/administration/provost/prospective-faculty/index.php.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential duties include teaching applied violin, mentoring undergraduate music students inside and outside of the studio, and actively recruiting a diverse body of talented string players. Teaching in additional core music areas related to strings (e.g. String Excerpts or Chamber Music Literature) may be required, depending on the needs of the school and as aligned with the candidate’s expertise, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute a student-centered immersive experience (equivalent to one course) as a part of the University’s experiential, contemporary, and integrative learning initiative – Hatter Ready. The candidate must maintain an active national professional profile, as well as collaborate effectively with Stetson string-area faculty members and the orchestra director. School and university service on committees is expected of all tenured and tenure-track faculty, as is contributing to advancing the mission of the school and promoting national prominence for Stetson University.

THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Stetson’s School of Music is an undergraduate-only program known for its excellence, depth, and long-standing reputation for the quality of its education. The school offers BM, BME, and BA degrees, with majors in performance, music education, music theory, composition, and outside-field areas. A faculty of 42 serves approximately 241 music majors and minors. The school has its own dean and holds full membership in the National Association of Schools of Music. Recent graduates of the School of Music are found on the stages of the world’s great opera houses (including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and Covent Garden), hold leadership positions in major symphony orchestras, serve as faculty members of the most prestigious colleges and universities throughout the nation, and matriculate in distinguished graduate programs in the United States and Europe. The School of Music is proud of the consistent placement of its BME graduates as teachers in K-12 school music education programs in Florida and throughout the nation.

THE UNIVERSITY: Founded in 1883, Stetson University (https://www.stetson.edu/) is a private, selective university comprised of a rich array of liberal arts and professional academic programs. Collectively, Stetson’s faculty works with approximately 3,700 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The University’s historic main campus, located in DeLand, enrolls approximately 2,300 students in undergraduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, and the School of Music. Stetson University College of Law, Florida’s first law school, moved from the main campus to Gulfport in 1945, and, with the addition of the Tampa Law Center, serves approximately 1,000 students working full-time or part-time toward J.D. or LL.M. degrees. Graduate programs based at the main campus in DeLand include Business, Accounting, Education, Counseling, and Creative Writing, with Educational Leadership cohorts also offered at the Gulfport campus. Stetson is Florida’s oldest private institution of higher learning and was the first private college in Florida to be granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Stetson University provides an inspiring education that engages students with rigorous academic and creative study grounded in liberal learning and promotes civic values of personal and social responsibility. Level I$54,600~15%
Level II$60,963~31%
Level III$67,327~46%
Level IV$73,690~61%

The listing has no salary, so we can't place it on a wage level. Ask the employer which wage level they'd file at: Level III–IV registrations get 3–4 entries in the H-1B lottery.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
