Position Description

Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric General Surgery at the University of Washington invites applications for a faculty position at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor without tenure (WOT), by reason of funding with an anticipated start date of January 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to support the department's commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time basis for a twelve-month appointment (3-year term renewable for Assistant Professor) beginning January 2027. The base salary range for this position will be: Assistant Professor $35,417-$39,584 ($425,004 - $475,008 annually); Associate Professor $41,667-$50,000 ($500,004 - $600,000 annually); Professor $52,084-$56,250 ($625,008 - $675,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include incentive through CUMG.

The successful candidate will provide the full spectrum of general and thoracic pediatric surgical care, with a particular focus on pediatric bariatric and metabolic surgery. Seattle Children’s Hospital has established a comprehensive obesity management center, with bariatric surgery serving as a major component of this multidisciplinary program. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the continued development and growth of the surgical program and collaborate closely with specialists across the obesity management center.

The primary site of practice will be Seattle Children’s Hospital, with opportunities to participate at other sites consistent with regional affiliations and institutional strategy. The Division of Pediatric General Surgery includes 16 board-certified pediatric surgeons and supports a busy tertiary and quaternary care practice, as well as regional clinics.

The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, educational, and academic missions of the division, including the selection, teaching, and training of residents and fellows. As a member of the University of Washington faculty, the candidate will engage in teaching, research, and service, with opportunities for scholarly activity, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

This position offers an outstanding opportunity for a pediatric surgeon to combine a broad general and thoracic surgery practice with a leadership role in the continued advancement of pediatric bariatric and metabolic surgery.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Salary vs prevailing wage

Level IV (fully competent)

LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$64,260~15%
Level II$96,983~31%
Level III$129,707~46%
Level IV$162,430~61%

This job pays $425,004–$675,000 a year — that's Level IV (fully competent). In the wage-weighted H-1B lottery a Level IV registration gets 4 entries; estimated selection chance about 61% — better than average.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
