Job description

Staff Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Soho, New York City (Onsite – 4–5 days per week)

Salary: $230,000 – $280,000 + Competitive Equity

Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced Infrastructure Engineer with a strong software engineering background who enjoys building and scaling infrastructure rather than simply maintaining existing systems?

We're working with an exciting, high-growth technology company in New York looking to appoint its first dedicated Staff Infrastructure Engineer.

This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of the company's infrastructure strategy, working closely with senior engineering leadership to design, build and scale the systems supporting its next phase of growth.

The business currently supports approximately 500 customers and processes over 1 billion invoice items every month, with both customer numbers and data volumes expected to grow by 2–3x over the next 12 months.

You'll play a critical role in ensuring the infrastructure can support this growth while improving reliability, security, automation and overall platform performance.

We're particularly interested in engineers who have previously worked within high-growth Series A–C startups, taking infrastructure from early-stage environments through significant periods of scaling.

The Role

As Staff Infrastructure Engineer, you'll take technical ownership of the company's cloud infrastructure, helping shape its architecture, reliability and long-term scalability.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, building and scaling AWS infrastructure to support significant increases in customers and data volumes.
  • Leading the evolution of the company's Kubernetes and Terraform architecture.
  • Supporting the migration away from ECS/Fargate towards a more scalable container orchestration environment.
  • Building and strengthening security infrastructure to support enterprise customers and compliance requirements.
  • Taking ownership of platform reliability, observability and operational performance.
  • Defining and implementing Service Level Objectives (SLOs), monitoring, alerting and incident response processes.
  • Developing production-quality software and automation to reduce manual processes and operational risks.
  • Improving infrastructure deployment processes, configuration management and infrastructure as code practices.
  • Identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks across cloud infrastructure and distributed systems.
  • Establishing best practices for infrastructure security, scalability and reliability.
  • Working closely with the VP of Engineering and Platform Engineering team to influence technical strategy and architecture decisions.
  • Helping establish the engineering standards and infrastructure foundations required to support the company's continued growth.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a technically strong engineer who combines software development expertise with hands-on experience building and scaling modern cloud infrastructure.

Essential experience:

  • 8+ years of professional engineering experience, ideally beginning your career in software engineering before moving into infrastructure or platform engineering.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Terraform and Kubernetes in production environments.
  • Experience designing, building and scaling cloud infrastructure, ideally within AWS.
  • Previous experience working within a high-growth Series A, B or C technology startup.
  • Proven track record of building infrastructure from the ground up or scaling existing environments through significant growth.
  • Experience managing Kubernetes environments ranging from a small number of clusters to larger distributed deployments.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure security and cloud security best practices.
  • Ability to write production-quality code and develop automation tools.
  • Experience making architectural decisions and taking ownership of complex infrastructure projects.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced engineering environment with significant technical responsibility.

Desirable experience:

  • Software development experience using TypeScript, Python, Rust or Java.
  • Experience with Docker, Helm and GitHub Actions.
  • Knowledge of AWS ECS and Fargate.
  • Experience implementing observability platforms covering metrics, logging, tracing and alerting.
  • Experience establishing SLIs, SLOs and incident management processes.
  • Familiarity with Kafka and distributed messaging systems.
  • Previous experience supporting infrastructure through rapid business growth.
  • Experience developing security infrastructure to meet enterprise and regulatory compliance requirements.

Technology Environment

You'll be working with a modern engineering stack including:

Cloud Infrastructure: AWS, ECS, Fargate

Containers & Orchestration: Kubernetes, Docker, Helm

Infrastructure as Code: Terraform

Software Engineering: TypeScript, Python, Rust

CI/CD & Automation: GitHub Actions, Git

Data & Messaging: Kafka

Reliability & Observability: Monitoring, Alerting, Metrics, Logging, Tracing, SLIs/SLOs

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who wants to move into a highly influential technical position within a growing technology business.

You'll benefit from:

  • Competitive base salary of $230,000 – $280,000
  • Competitive equity package
  • Opportunity to become the company's first dedicated Infrastructure Engineer
  • Significant ownership of infrastructure architecture and technical strategy
  • Direct collaboration with the VP of Engineering
  • Opportunity to build and scale infrastructure supporting billions of transactions
  • Exposure to challenging cloud infrastructure, security and reliability projects
  • The ability to influence engineering standards and technology decisions across the organisation
  • Opportunity to play a key role in supporting the company's next phase of growth

Location & Working Arrangements

The position is based in Soho, New York City, with an expectation of working onsite five days per week.

Some flexibility for four days onsite may be considered.

Candidates requiring eligible visa transfers, including H-1B transfers, may also be considered.

Visa sponsorship record

No public sponsorship records found

We didn't find H-1B, H-1B1, E-3 or green card (PERM) filings under the name CRG People & Transformation in the Department of Labor and USCIS data. That doesn't mean the job can't be sponsored — the company may file under a different legal name, be new to sponsorship, or sponsor a visa that isn't in these datasets (for example H-2B or J-1).

Tip: ask the recruiter early, in writing, which visa they sponsor and whether they cover the legal and filing fees.

Which visas can work for this job

Occupation: Engineers, All Other (SOC 17-2199) — estimated from the job title.

  • Mentioned in the listing

    H-1B

  • H-1B cap-exempt employer

Regular cap-subject employer — a new H-1B needs to win the lottery in March (unless you already hold cap-counted H-1B status).

  • TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)

This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Engineer” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.

  • E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)

Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.

  • O-1 (extraordinary ability)

For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.

  • STEM OPT extension (F-1 students)

Requires an E-Verify employer. We didn't find this company in the E-Verify list — ask HR.

Salary vs prevailing wage

Level IV (fully competent)

Engineers, All Other · New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ. Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).

L1L2L3L4
LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$89,170~15%
Level II$113,942~31%
Level III$138,715~46%
Level IV$163,488~61%

This job pays $230,000–$280,000 a year — that's Level IV (fully competent). In the wage-weighted H-1B lottery a Level IV registration gets 4 entries; estimated selection chance about 61% — better than average.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
