Job Description
Location: Houston (Hybrid – at least 3 days onsite/week)

Talan is looking for a Senior Software Engineer - AWS / Python to support a key client in the energy trading industry.
Most engineers inherit systems. You have the chance to create one. We’re starting a greenfield data ingestion platform for the energy sector, and we need a senior Python developer to architect it and write its first line of code. Every foundational decision, from service boundaries to data models to how the system scales, will be yours to shape alongside a team that wants to get it right.
Energy markets move fast, and the data behind them is high-volume, high-stakes, and often messy. Your work will power pre-trade workflows, market data, pricing, and analytics that traders and analysts depend on. You’ll build on AWS, using Python as the core language, and design for security, reliability, and scale from day one.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build cloud-native applications, APIs, microservices, and event-driven pipelines on AWS, starting from a blank canvas.
- Write backend services and automation in Python that process large volumes of market and energy data reliably.
- Architect services for market data, pricing, analytics, and pre-trade workflows, making the calls that will define how the platform grows.
- Codify your infrastructure with Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation so environments are repeatable and auditable.
- Build the CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, and observability that keep the platform healthy in production.
- Bake in cloud security and secure development practices from the first commit, not as an afterthought.
- Tune performance, reliability, scalability, and AWS spend as the system takes real load.
- Lead architecture reviews and code reviews, setting the standards the team will follow for years.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of hands-on backend development with strong object-oriented design, including event-driven and distributed systems.
- 5+ years building complex Python applications that handle high-volume data, along with APIs, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
- 5+ years deploying Python applications on AWS, ideally with services like Kafka, Redis/ElastiCache, RDS, Aurora, and S3.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or Quantitative Finance.
Nice to Have
- Experience in energy trading, commodities, market data, pricing, or financial markets
- Microsoft Azure experience
- Athena, or Redshift
- C#/.NET or React or Angular
- AWS or Azure certifications

Which visas can work for this job
Occupation: Software Developers (SOC 15-1252).
- H-1B cap-exempt employer
Regular cap-subject employer — a new H-1B needs to win the lottery in March (unless you already hold cap-counted H-1B status).
- TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)
This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Computer Systems Analyst (or Engineer, for engineering-degree holders)” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.
- E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)
Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.
- O-1 (extraordinary ability)
For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.
- STEM OPT extension (F-1 students)
Requires an E-Verify employer. We didn't find this company in the E-Verify list — ask HR.
- Green card (EB-2 / EB-3 via PERM)
Filed 1 PERM labor certification: they have a track record of sponsoring permanent residence.
Salary vs prevailing wage
Software Developers · Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX. Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).
| Level | Prevailing wage | H-1B lottery odds* |
|---|---|---|
| Level I | $87,776 | ~15% |
| Level II | $110,344 | ~31% |
| Level III | $132,891 | ~46% |
| Level IV | $155,459 | ~61% |
The listing has no salary, so we can't place it on a wage level. Ask the employer which wage level they'd file at: Level III–IV registrations get 3–4 entries in the H-1B lottery.
* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
