Family Medicine Faculty
StartDate: ASAP Pay Rate: $270000.00 - $270000.00

Academic Family Medicine with a 0.4 FTE Clinical Commitment

Protected Time for Teaching, Leadership, and Scholarship

Broad-Spectrum Practice with Procedural and Inpatient Teaching

University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences | Bismarck, North Dakota

AMN Healthcare is partnering with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences to recruit two full-time, non-tenure-track Family Medicine Core Faculty physicians in Bismarck. This role is designed for physicians who want to teach residents, maintain a broad-spectrum practice, and help shape the next generation of family medicine at a highly respected residency program.

UND SMHS is recognized throughout the region for its commitment to rural and community-based medical education, providing faculty members the chance to influence healthcare delivery across North Dakota and beyond.

Faculty receive an appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, commensurate with experience, and join a long-tenured team known for mentorship, collaboration, and flexibility. Approximately 40% of the role is devoted to direct clinical care, with the remaining time protected for resident and medical student education, clinical supervision, curriculum development, scholarship, and administration.

Opportunity Highlights:

  • Approximately 0.4 FTE direct clinical care, generally structured as up to four half-day clinical sessions per week once fully ramped up.
  • Protected teaching and administrative time for resident and medical student education, clinical supervision, curriculum development, scholarship, and program activities.
  • Broad procedural practice that may include joint injections and aspirations, skin biopsies, intrauterine device procedures, lesion removal, point-of-care ultrasound, toenail removal, colposcopy, circumcision, vasectomy, and endometrial biopsy.
  • Inpatient service emphasizes teaching and supervision rather than a service-heavy hospitalist model; morning rounds are followed by flexibility for teaching, administration, clinic work, or other responsibilities.
  • Opportunities to support family medicine obstetrics education; cesarean-section coverage is not required. Geriatrics and point-of-care ultrasound interests are also valued.
  • On-site laboratory, X-ray, pharmacy, dedicated registered-nurse support, and Epic EMR with Dragon Copilot (formerly DAX) AI-assisted clinical documentation.
  • Pathways to grow into education, research, recruitment, or other leadership responsibilities as interests and program needs evolve.
  • Open to established physicians, new graduates, early-career physicians seeking a first faculty appointment, and community physicians interested in transitioning into education.
  • J-1 waiver and H-1B candidates may be considered depending on program requirements and the individual case.

The Academic Practice

The Bismarck program combines outpatient continuity, inpatient teaching, procedures, geriatrics, and community-based graduate medical education. The clinic records approximately 15,000 annual visits, including laboratory, X-ray, and nursing encounters. Faculty also help supervise continuity care for patients served across nine nursing homes. The current team includes three core faculty members and three community physicians who contribute outpatient precepting, allowing core faculty to balance clinic and inpatient teaching. Visiting specialists and educators add support in pediatric neurology, dermatology, child and adult psychiatry, and asthma education.

Candidate Profile

The program seeks a collaborative, compassionate family physician who values resident education, humanistic care, procedural teaching, and meaningful community engagement. Candidates should be comfortable maintaining a broad-based family medicine practice and participating in resident supervision across outpatient and inpatient settings. Prior teaching, curriculum, or scholarly experience is welcomed but is not required for every candidate. A sustained interest in academic medicine, community-based care, mentorship, and professional growth is central to the role.

Which visas can work for this job

Occupation: Physicians, All Other (SOC 29-1229) — estimated from the job title.

  • Mentioned in the listing

    H-1B

  • H-1B cap-exempt employer

Regular cap-subject employer — a new H-1B needs to win the lottery in March (unless you already hold cap-counted H-1B status).

  • TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)

This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Physician (teaching or research only)” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.

  • E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)

Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.

  • O-1 (extraordinary ability)

For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.

Salary vs prevailing wage

Level II (qualified)

Physicians, All Other · North Dakota (state median of areas). Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).

LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$132,288~15%
Level II$247,250~31%
Level III$362,211~46%
Level IV$477,173~61%

This job pays $270,000 a year — that's Level II (qualified). In the wage-weighted H-1B lottery a Level II registration gets 2 entries; estimated selection chance about 31%.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
