Position Summary:

This academic year non-tenured track Assistant Professor faculty member is expected to teach courses in geology according to the needs of the department and as directed by the department chair. This position will expand externally funded research, strengthen industry and national laboratory partnerships, and further establish the University of Idaho as a statewide and regional leader in mining-related research and innovation. Critical minerals, which include lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements, and other strategically important resources, are a major national priority and an area of significant investment by federal agencies, including the Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Department of Defense (DOD). A clinical faculty member in this area would position the university to compete for these investments while developing sustained partnerships with national laboratories, industry, and other universities. This position will include the role as Director of the Electron Microscopy Center and will sustain and expand its Mission, including instruction on specialized equipment. Building these long-term programs and partnerships requires continuity, research leadership, and institutional commitment.

The College of Science is also recruiting new faculty in biology (ecological immunology), geography (health geography), geology (critical materials), physics (research area open), and statistics or applied mathematics (for independent or collaborative research in nutrition and women's health).

Minimum Education/Degree Required:

Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Geology or other geosciences related field
  • Expertise in geology, as indicated by dissertation research, peer-reviewed publications, and/or industry experience
  • Experience in developing externally funded research program
  • Expertise in analysis using an Electron microscopy equipment including – XRD, SEM, Crystallographer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching graduate and undergraduate mineralogy and petrology courses, or additional needs of the department
  • Demonstrated scholarship and teaching excellence in mineralogy, or critical minerals, or a related field
  • Potential for collaborative research with UI faculty
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
