Job description

Join A Dynamic Team at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as a Hospital Medicine Physician

We believe in bringing "better" to our local community in Cedar Rapids — better care, better collaboration, and a deep commitment to the people we serve. We'd love to talk if you're looking for a role that supports your professional growth and connection to a vibrant community.

Local Team Collaboration:

  • Join our close-knit team of 14 physicians and 8 advanced practice providers at Mercy Medical Center.
  • We have enjoyed our partnership with Mercy Medical Center since 2015 and are a trusted and consulted team on many hospital-wide initiatives.
  • We value our collaboration with the nurses and specialists throughout the hospital. Patients are our top priority, and we do a great job of always keeping that focus at the forefront.

Qualifications:

  • Board-certified/eligible in family or internal medicine.
  • All levels of experience are encouraged to apply.
  • We proudly sponsor H1B visa candidates and provide in-house visa specialists, licensing, and credentialing support. All required filing fees for the visa are covered by Sound.
  • At this time, we can only consider H1B visa candidates.

Scheduling:

  • Scheduling is a team effort. While most shifts are days, everyone rotates mid-shifts monthly and takes minimal night shifts.
  • Flexibility is key in a block schedule; this team supports it whenever possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • We welcome the challenge of managing various cases, varying in acuity and complexity.
  • Our critical care team manages all ICU patients on vents, pressors, and BiPAP. Our team may have a patient or two in the ICU; however, they have lower acuity and are very manageable.
  • If you are comfortable with procedures, you can do them. However, they are not required.
  • We respond to codes and rapid alerts on our patients, as well as if one is called and we are nearby. Our team is highly engaged in helping each other in any way we can.

Living and Working in Cedar Rapids:

Many who come to Cedar Rapids are pleasantly surprised to find a highly diverse population base. This is mainly due to major employers such as Collins Aerospace and Transamerica. These world-renowned companies, coupled with the University of Iowa (located 30 minutes from Cedar Rapids), contribute to the celebration of cultural diversity that makes Cedar Rapids feel comfortable to many worldwide.

Rewards and Compensation:

  • Market-competitive compensation package, including bonus incentives.
  • Comprehensive Benefits begin on Day one, including malpractice with tail coverage.
  • Relocation allowance and Commencement bonus available.

Which visas can work for this job

Occupation: Physicians, All Other (SOC 29-1229).

  • Mentioned in the listing

    H-1B

  • H-1B cap-exempt employer

Regular cap-subject employer — a new H-1B needs to win the lottery in March (unless you already hold cap-counted H-1B status).

  • TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)

This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Physician (teaching or research only)” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.

  • E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)

Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.

  • O-1 (extraordinary ability)

For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.

  • Green card (EB-2 / EB-3 via PERM)

Filed 3 PERM labor certifications: they have a track record of sponsoring permanent residence.

Salary vs prevailing wage

Physicians, All Other · Iowa (state median of areas). Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).

LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$93,881~15%
Level II$178,006~31%
Level III$247,936~46%
Level IV$317,876~61%

The listing has no salary, so we can't place it on a wage level. Ask the employer which wage level they'd file at: Level III–IV registrations get 3–4 entries in the H-1B lottery.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
