College of Engineering

Job Description

The College of Engineering at the University of Missouri (MU) invites applications and nominations for tenured and tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant, associate, or full professor level. Successful candidates will hold their academic appointments in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), with an affiliation in the Center for Geospatial Intelligence (CGI).

This recruitment is part of MizzouForward, a major institutional investment in faculty recruitment, research infrastructure, and student success. Successful candidates will enhance externally funded research programs that expand MU’s strengths in geospatial intelligence, contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in EECS, and advance interdisciplinary research through CGI.

CGI conducts interdisciplinary research across a broad range of areas, including satellite, airborne (e.g., drone), and ground-based remote sensing; artificial intelligence; computer vision; autonomous systems; data fusion; high-performance computing; change detection; and surveillance. Incoming faculty will join a research community with established federal partnerships and expertise in developing geospatial technologies for national security and other applications. CGI’s secure research facilities and specialized computing infrastructure support work with government and industry partners.

The College of Engineering’s strategic plan emphasizes interdisciplinary research connecting artificial intelligence, materials, and energy. Incoming faculty will have opportunities to contribute to these priorities through collaborations that apply geospatial analysis and advanced computing to areas such as energy infrastructure resilience, environmental monitoring, and materials discovery. The Materials Science and Engineering Institute and the forthcoming Payne Energy Innovation Center, a 116,000-square-foot facility bringing together researchers in energy, materials, and data science, will provide additional connections across Engineering and other colleges.

Faculty will also have opportunities to collaborate through MU’s AI Education, Research and Infrastructure (AERI) Center, which connects researchers across disciplines to advance applied AI research, computing infrastructure, and workforce development. The Center for Cybersecurity and the Quantum Innovation Center offer further opportunities for collaborative research in secure systems and quantum approaches to computing and data analysis. University research resources include the Hellbender high-performance computing environment and immersive visualization facilities for AI and large-scale data analytics.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification

An earned doctorate in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

Active U.S. Government security clearance or ability to obtain U.S. Government security clearance at the Secret level or higher.

Candidates will be evaluated on the following factors

  • Track record of external research funding, particularly from federal agencies
  • Experience in, or demonstrated potential to contribute to, research addressing national security needs, including collaboration with federal agencies, national laboratories, or industry partners.
  • Research portfolio and accomplishments (e.g., publication record, number of citations)
  • National awards and honors, membership with national academies
  • Interdisciplinary orientation of their work

The priority deadline for applications is November 30th, 2026 but the posting will remain open until filled. Candidates across all academic ranks will be considered. This is not a remote opportunity.

Please direct questions about your application, the hiring process, or the MizzouForward initiative to (mizzouforward@missouri.edu).

Visa sponsorship record

No public sponsorship records found

We didn't find H-1B, H-1B1, E-3 or green card (PERM) filings under the name University of MissouriColumbia in the Department of Labor and USCIS data. That doesn't mean the job can't be sponsored — the company may file under a different legal name, be new to sponsorship, or sponsor a visa that isn't in these datasets (for example H-2B or J-1).

Tip: ask the recruiter early, in writing, which visa they sponsor and whether they cover the legal and filing fees.

Which visas can work for this job

Occupation: Electrical Engineers (SOC 17-2071) — estimated from the job title.

  • Mentioned in the listing

    H-1B

  • H-1B cap-exempt employer

Regular cap-subject employer — a new H-1B needs to win the lottery in March (unless you already hold cap-counted H-1B status).

  • TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)

This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Engineer” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.

  • E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)

Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.

  • O-1 (extraordinary ability)

For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.

  • STEM OPT extension (F-1 students)

Requires an E-Verify employer. We didn't find this company in the E-Verify list — ask HR.

Salary vs prevailing wage

Electrical Engineers · Columbia, MO. Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).

L1L2L3L4
LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$66,206~15%
Level II$83,595~31%
Level III$100,963~46%
Level IV$118,352~61%

The listing has no salary, so we can't place it on a wage level. Ask the employer which wage level they'd file at: Level III–IV registrations get 3–4 entries in the H-1B lottery.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
