Job description

ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY

Assistant Professor of Environmental Science

Maryville College, a selective four-year liberal arts college committed to superior teaching, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Science position beginning in August 2027. We seek a broadly trained Environmental Scientist who holds a Ph.D. in an Environmental Science discipline (e.g., atmospheric science, botany, conservation biology, Earth science, geography, geology, hydrology, natural resource management, zoology, or a closely related discipline). Candidates who will complete the Ph.D. by August 2027 will be considered.

Teaching responsibilities will include teaching a sophomore-level Earth System Processes course, upper-level Environmental Science courses, and General Education courses. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence as innovative teachers, who understand that a liberal arts education includes a student-centered undergraduate experience, and who have successfully mentored a diverse student population. Candidates with proven ability to advise undergraduate research are preferred because supervision of research projects is expected.

Maryville is ideally situated between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Knoxville, the state’s third largest city, and is within minutes of the major research facilities of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (MC holds associate membership), the University of Tennessee, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Division of Natural Sciences has active research partnerships with the National Park Service in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most biodiverse national park in the U.S., and will soon be housed in The Alexander Institute for Conservation Leadership and the Sciences, a state-of-the-art science facility featuring indoor and outdoor teaching labs and centers focused on Appalachian wellness, the outdoors, and environmental education. The historic 263-acre campus includes a 140-acre multi-use forest extensively used for undergraduate research projects and teaching labs.

Founded in Maryville, Tenn., in 1819, Maryville College is one of the oldest baccalaureate-granting institutions of higher learning in the South. Consistently ranked in the top tier of regional colleges and universities, it offers a curriculum notable for integrating a strong liberal arts core program, undergraduate research and emphasis on career preparation. Faculty in the Division of Natural Sciences regularly mentor students in research projects during a two-semester senior study. The student body of about 1,100 is drawn mostly from the Southeast, Middle Atlantic States and the Midwest. The College maintains an affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and encourages students, faculty, and staff to grow in wisdom and work for justice.

Consideration of applicants will begin on January 11, 2027. Application materials including a letter of interest addressed to Dr. Drew Crain, Chair, Natural Sciences Division, graduate transcripts (all official transcripts will be required upon hire), a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement on diversity, student evaluations from the past two semesters (if available), and a list of references (including contact information) should be uploaded as a single document in the online application system or emailed to environmentalscience.search@maryvillecollege.edu.

Which visas can work for this job

  • TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)

This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Teacher (college, university or seminary)” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.

Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.

Salary vs prevailing wage

LevelPrevailing wageH-1B lottery odds*
Level I$62,760~15%
Level II$79,280~31%
Level III$95,800~46%
Level IV$112,320~61%

The listing has no salary, so we can't place it on a wage level. Ask the employer which wage level they'd file at: Level III–IV registrations get 3–4 entries in the H-1B lottery.

* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
