Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION HIRING: Forward Deployed Engineer | Agentic AI | San Francisco
Are you an engineer who can build the solution, own the customer relationship, and make AI actually work in production? We’re hiring 3 Forward Deployed Engineers for a high-ownership, customer-facing engineering role in San Francisco’s Mission District. This is not a traditional SWE role. You’ll be the person customers rely on to diagnose problems, build solutions, deploy AI automation, manage agent performance, and help grow the account.
Location: San Francisco, CA — Mission
Work Style: In-person, 5 days/week
Salary: $160K–$200K
Equity: Competitive
Visa: OPT / H1B transfers supported; no new H1B sponsorship
Hiring: 3 candidates
Employment: Full-time
Interview: 3 steps
Travel: Not required, but possible
Tech: AI tools, JavaScript, web automation, agentic workflows
WHAT MAKES THIS FDE ROLE DIFFERENT?
You’ll own your accounts end-to-end. There is no dedicated success manager, account lead, or handoff layer between you and the customer. You are the:
- Engineer
- Customer partner
- Problem solver
- AI/automation expert
- Account owner
You’ll build the relationship, understand the business problem, ship the solution, maintain it, and identify opportunities to expand the customer’s use of AI.
WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON
- Tailor autonomous AI agents to complex customer workflows
- Configure, prompt, and orchestrate AI agents across enterprise software
- Work with legacy and complex enterprise systems
- Manage and tune AI agents to ensure reliable production performance
- Build automations using internal libraries, tools, and products
- Prototype new automation techniques and intelligent workflows
- Optimize pipelines for intelligent document extraction
- Bridge customer, product, and engineering teams
- Help identify opportunities to expand AI-powered solutions
REQUIRED FDE / CUSTOMER-ENGINEERING BACKGROUND
We’re looking for 4–8 years of experience in one or more of:
- Forward Deployed Engineering
- Customer-facing Software Engineering
- Technical Solutions Engineering
Plus:
- 3+ years managing, tuning, or configuring AI agents for customers OR meaningful customer-facing technical/project ownership
- Strong hands-on JavaScript skills
- Extensive experience using modern AI coding tools such as Cursor, Windsurf, or Claude Code
- Web automation experience with Selenium, Playwright, or similar tools
THE MOST IMPORTANT SOFT SKILLS
Technical ability is only half of the job. We’re looking for someone who:
- Genuinely enjoys talking with customers
- Can simplify complex technical ideas for non-technical stakeholders
- Has exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- Thinks beyond quick fixes and patches
- Can influence the long-term product roadmap
- Brings urgency, ownership, creativity, and follow-through
- Enjoys solving messy, ambiguous technical problems
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience scaling a company through Seed / Series A Agentic AI or agentic workflow experience
- Experience at an AI-native startup
- Top CS background such as Stanford, MIT, or Waterloo — preferred, not required
THIS ROLE IS NOT FOR YOU IF...
- You prefer purely internal engineering with limited customer interaction
- You lack strong customer-facing communication skills
- Your experience is primarily basic configuration without hands-on engineering
- You prefer fixing isolated technical issues rather than owning the broader customer outcome
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
If you can talk to the customer, understand the problem, write the code, configure the AI agent, deploy the solution, and stay accountable for the outcome — we’d love to hear from you.
This is an opportunity to sit directly at the intersection of AI + Engineering + Customers + Product.
Visa sponsorship record
No public sponsorship records foundWe didn't find H-1B, H-1B1, E-3 or green card (PERM) filings under the name MortAi in the Department of Labor and USCIS data. That doesn't mean the job can't be sponsored — the company may file under a different legal name, be new to sponsorship, or sponsor a visa that isn't in these datasets (for example H-2B or J-1).
Tip: ask the recruiter early, in writing, which visa they sponsor and whether they cover the legal and filing fees.

Occupation: Software Developers (SOC 15-1252).
- Mentioned in the listing
H-1B, OPT
- H-1B cap-exempt employer
Regular cap-subject employer — a new H-1B needs to win the lottery in March (unless you already hold cap-counted H-1B status).
- TN (citizens of Canada and Mexico)
This kind of role may fit the USMCA profession “Computer Systems Analyst (or Engineer, for engineering-degree holders)” — it depends on the actual duties. No lottery, no cap; you need the matching degree or license.
- E-3 (Australia) and H-1B1 (Chile, Singapore)
Same degree requirement as H-1B, but no lottery and a separate quota that is rarely filled.
- O-1 (extraordinary ability)
For candidates with awards, publications, press, a high salary or critical roles at distinguished organizations. No cap, no lottery; the employer files a petition.
- STEM OPT extension (F-1 students)
Requires an E-Verify employer. We didn't find this company in the E-Verify list — ask HR.
Salary vs prevailing wage
Level I (entry)Software Developers · San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA. Annual prevailing wages set by the Department of Labor (OFLC).
| Level | Prevailing wage | H-1B lottery odds* |
|---|---|---|
| Level I | $137,093 | ~15% |
| Level II | $165,131 | ~31% |
| Level III | $193,149 | ~46% |
| Level IV | $221,187 | ~61% |
This job pays $160,000–$200,000 a year — that's Level I (entry). In the wage-weighted H-1B lottery a Level I registration gets 1 entry; estimated selection chance about 15% — below average.
* Odds are DHS projections for the FY2027 wage-weighted lottery (actual results vary by year and employer). Since the FY2027 cap season the H-1B lottery is weighted by wage level: Level I = 1 entry, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4. The level is set by the offered wage against the prevailing wage for the occupation and worksite. Separately, a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions for workers outside the US was announced in 2025; as of September 2026 a federal court ruling keeps it unenforceable while appeals continue — check the current status.
